Getting Excite-o for Phyto

Phytoplankton, that is.

There has been a great deal of marketing and buzz about phytoplankton and a great many claims to go along with it. These claims include

  • Better skin health
  • Better digestive health
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved recovery time after strenuous exercise
  • Improved mood
  • Greater longevity

Most of the data regarding phytoplankton as the source for improvement in all of these health categories is anecdotal, there are very few third party studies available. While phytoplankton is a source of vitamins A, C, D, and K, beta carotene, calcium, magnesium, selenium, iron, omega fatty acids, protein, fibre and anti-oxidants, the above mentioned health benefits have been more thoroughly studied as a result of individual trials and research done on the micronutrients contained in phytoplankton, as opposed to phytoplankton itself.

To that end, phytoplankton is classified as a superfood because of its nutrient dense makeup.  Commercially available powders and tablets, therefore, pack a powerful punch when it comes to putting a sharper edge on your diet and providing some missing nutrients.

Karen Phytoplankton, the brand carried at Pharmasave in Summerland, is seed produced and not harvested from the ocean making it sustainable and not a drain to natural resources. In nature phytoplankton provides 50% of the oxygen on our planet (trees provide the other 50%), so it is important not to tax this natural resource, especially when it can be produced organically and processed for consumption without creating a strain for Mother Nature.
